Thanklessness of Urban Educated Middle Class

Yes I am one of them.

Analyzing the results of the election – One thing is clear – that educated middle class voters who once supported DMK in the last several elections did not vote for the DPA alliance this time. In every major metropolitan cities in TN (7 constituencies in Chennai - Mylapore, Saidapet, Royapuram, RK Nagar, Triplicane, T. Nagar, Madurai West, Madurai East, Srirangam, Salem-1, Coimbatore West), DPA lost the key constituencies where majority of the Urban Educated Middle Class people live. They either stayed home or voted for the DMDK candidates. Here are their reasons:

    1. DMK was not fiscally conservative. They were giving all the freebies to urban poor & rural agricultural people instead of investing the taxpayers’ money in industrial and infrastructure projects which would have created low and high wage jobs.

    2. DMK is more of a corrupt “family business party” only to enrich their family and not for the public.

    3. DMK, Congress and the Left might bring new affirmative action (reservation) policies which might hurt us in getting admissions in premier higher education institutions.

    4. Maran brothers have monopolized the ‘media business’ in TN – so I hate them – I am envy of them

So I hate both the parties. So I stayed home. Or, I voted for DMDK. If you are like me – who cares about our TN state’s economic well being you shouldn’t have done what you did - by staying home or voted for the other party. YOU SHOULD HAVE VOTED FOR THE DMK/DPA ALLIANCE. Why? Here is the reason:

Congress party MPs after 1967 – This is a party of Landlords whose ministers never stood for anything. Other than P Chidambaram & Mani Shankar Iyer, none of the other central ministers have made a name for themselves. All of them have not taken any major steps to bring infrastructure or industrial govt or private company projects to the state. In fact none of the congress ministers have any kind of political influence in the centre. Did they do anything for the middle class? Did they do anything for industrialization of TN? The big answer is No.

BJP party MPS 1996-2006 – Did any of the BJP ministers who hailed from TN do any of the lobbying necessary for TN projects. Can any one say any major achievement of TN-BJP ministers when they were in the centre? The big answer is No.

JJ’s AIADMK MPs & VaiKo’s MDMK MPs: Can you name any of the Central ministers from these parties who made a name for their performance? Can you identify any of them to bring any kind of small or big private industrial or govt infrastructure projects to the state? The big answer is No.

Recent DMK party & their MPs – MK as a state CM (1996-2001) brought several auto manufacturing assembly projects (Ford, Hyundai etc) and TIDAL (IT) park to the state. These actions by MK has brough both ‘low’ wage manufacturing jobs for the unskilled or partially skilled labors as well as high wage jobs in our state. In fact, he started the Nanguneri IT SEZ in the Southern TN during the last term, but did not get finished because you threw him out. In fact, as a commerce minister Murasoli Maran made a name at the all India level for fighting for country’s trading rights in WTO. What you have rewarded them in the last election? You threw his DMK party from power in the State. So what they did afterwards. Even when in opposition in the state, instead of sitting idle at the centre, the DMK party asked for specific portfolios (Shipping & IT Communications) from the centre (Sonia) and the two DMK ministers [TR Balu (TRB) & Dayanidhi Maran (DM)] were currently working hard to bring the Sedu Samudram project and several IT companies to the state for increasing employment for the poor and the middle class. After doing all these things, you rewarded them in this election by staying home or voted for the other party because of your envy of Maran brothers. Next to Naidu (Andhra), DM is the only TN minister in Southern India who is actively lobbying/lobbied to bring IT projects to the state. Did JJ do it? Did Central Congress ministers lobbied for any kind of small or big projects to the state? Whether it is Murasoli Maran with the BJP govt or Dayanidhi Maran/TRBalu with the cong govt – they both worked hard to bring projects to TN. Have you rewarded them in this election? No.

After seeing this ‘thankless urban middle class’ in the last 2001 election and assessing their low electoral value (numerical advantage) in the electoral politics, the DMK party has decided in this 2006 election to create the extreme leftist manifesto to appeal to the urban poor and lower income groups so that they can come back to power. Since these people have now rewarded them with power, and SINCE THEY ARE DEPENDENT NOW ON CPI/CPM/PMK MLAs for majority, the current DMK may move more to the left and not invest in projects benefiting middle class. This is what Communists in West Bengal have done for the last 35 years. Consistently for 7 terms, they spent ALL their tax money in their votebank rich rural areas by giving subsidies etc., and during their rule they never developed the state like TN. By not voting for DMK in this election, you have not given the absolute majority to DMK and thereby forcing them to move more to the LEFT when they govern for next 5 years. Instead of envying at Maran Brothers or disliking the personal follies and failures of DMK politicians, you should vote with your head not with your prejudice or envy. Had you voted for DMK, DMK would have gained 11 or even more seats (see above) and they might have come closer to the majority.

Whether it is Indian Democracy or American Democracy, the politician who runs for Chief office has to bring the rich and the poor together during the election campaign. In USA, the Democratic Party candidates move to the ‘left’ in the primaries and in the main election the candidate move to the ‘Centre’ in order to bridge the coalition. The same way, the Republican Party candidates move to the ‘right’ during primaries and try to move to the ‘centre’ in the main election. So, now, MK has moved to the ‘extreme left’ in this assembly election. But, if you want him to govern from the ‘centre’, you SHOULD HAVE GIVEN HIM THE ABSOLUTE MAJORITY. By not giving this majority, there is a definite possibility that he might move even more ‘left’ and if he or his party succeeded in the next election you have made TN state into a West Bengal state. The DMK party which campaigned and governed from the ‘centre (middle)’ all these years, have moved to the LEFT - thanks to you ‘thankless Urban Educated Middle Class. The next time when you Vote – Vote with your head not with your prejudice or envy. Vijayakanth’s DMDK or Congress is not alternative for DMK. They are even more left in various fiscal policies.

Thanklessness of urban educated middle class!!!!!. For your kind information, we have given full support for them in Lok sabha elections. Its becos of his populist election portfolio he lost his support with the urban middle class. On one side Chidambaram extracts maximum money from the middle class in the name of tax and on the other side MK distributes that as Color TVs and free gold.

I agree with you in one instance. Unless otherwise these educated middle class comes out and vote to prove its strength, its going to be worse in the days to come. People who voted for Lok paritran have done their democratic duty.

Many of the comments are not true. JJ too brought in many projects and attracted FDI.

    Reasons to hate DMK:
    1. Vote bank politics, or divide and rule policy (like reservation based on Religion).
    2. No long term policies in his manifesto.
    3. Settop box system in Chennai, just for the sake of forcing people to watch Sun TV.
    4. Rowdy raj comes back, whenever he comes to power.
    5. Caste based politics. He made Ramadoss, AC Shanmugam as leaders and had coalition with them during elections.
    6. Domination over media.

Inspite of Mr.Maran's attitude towards DTH project of TATA's if people still believe the DMK demanded specific portfolio to usher prosperity to TN. They must be joking. Further It is a well known fact, that Mr.Balu has got good interest in shipping and his son is running a forwarding division in Chennai. The draft design of Sethu Samudram project is never going to allow even medium size ships to pass through.

I appreciate the author of this article for having taken the time and pain to list the achievements of the DMK regime.

First of all, I pray everyone citizen of this state to come out of your confort zone and cast your vote duirng election. If you don;t you lose the ethical rights to comments on the political system or the political situation.

What the author has failed to realize is that, the (educated? you mean text book education)middle class has lots hope in the DMK regime not because they did not offer tax soaps.

Familiarity breeds contempt. Bringing the same party back to power breeds corruption and more corruption. We ran out of options all these days. It's time for a change. We now few new choices, These DMK and ADMK goonda parties must be taught a lesson.

The so called (educated) middle class will not come down the steets and do dharna or fight against corruption. The one and only lethal weapon we have in our hands is our voting rights. It;s time to teach lessons to these parties by showing our unanimous support to the new parties, there by passing a chill over the spine of these goonda parties.

It's been 40 years since these goonda parties started to rule this state. Please think outside the box. Don;t look at the recent changes alone. It can by no means be an alibi when compared to the henious damage these parties have done to state and the people. They have to be wiped out of the scene.
